Fish Curry in simple steps

Origin: This curry is from Eluru, West Godavari District, Andhra Pradesh, India.

Step 1: Required ingredients
Two large Onions
6 Green Chillis
6 Garlic Cloves
Little Ginger
Few Curry Leaves
One spoon Cumin Seeds
One spoon Mustard Seeds
5 spoons Peanut Oil
Little Turmeric
One spoon Red Chili powder
Handful of Tamarind
Few Coriander Leaves
1 KG (2 LB+) Fish (Tilapia)

Step 2: Preparation
Cut Onions, Chillis, Garlic, Ginger, Curry Leaves as shown above

Step 3: Prepare fish
Put fish in utensil. Add one spoon Turmeric powder and one spoon Salt. Wash with water for three to four times. Turmeric and Salt kills any bacteria if exists.

Step 4: Prepare Tamarind Juice
Take handful of Tamarind. Add warm water. Make it juice. Filter the juice with hand.

Step 5: Cook
Follow as showed in images. Cook time varies a little bit based on heat and quantity.

Step 6: Final Touch
After 60 to 90 minutes of cooking, taste the juice and small piece. Add salt if required.
Add Coriander leaves. Wait few minutes before serve.

Variation 1:
Paste Garlic and Ginger and add it to oil.

Variation 2:
Few people add Grated Coconut or coconut milk. This gives more gravy and nice taste. If you didn’t preserve the cooked fish curry in fridge it will spoil easily.

Variation 3:
People add coriander powder 10 minutes before switching off stove

Variation 4:
Few people add Tomato pieces too after Onions turned to golden color.

  • Don’t stir the curry. Stirring brakes the pieces
  • Onions should come to golden color. This is possible through keeping stove in low
  • Cook in evening. Put in fridge. Serve as lunch or dinner next day. After marinating, it tastes better.
  • Eat in bright light and slowly. There are sharp fish bones which may stuck in throat.
  • Few people from Kerala / Tamilanadu use mud utensil for cooking
  • Parents need to help kids to take out fish bones.
  • Better to eat with hand then spoon and fork.
  • In India Fish Curry is served with hot rice.
  • Wash hands with soap after cooking. Otherwise hand gives fish smell.
  • Eat few fennel seeds after meals. This takes away fish smell.
  • Practice makes curry tasty. Keep cooking.

Thanks to God for giving Fish and two hands to cook and eat.
